FAO Director General Led the Chinese Lunar New Year Celebration Focusing on Transformation and Global Solidarity

The Chinese Lunar New Year will commence on January 29,2025 and it is commemorated as the start of the year of the Snake. The snake stands for wisdom, transformation, change and new beginnings. The Chinese Lunar New Year is also known as the Spring Festival which majorly focuses on fostering the bonding, love and prosperity through family reunions, special meals and diverse cultural events during this auspicious day. 

On Thursday, the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) Director General Qu Dongyu led the celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year at the headquarters of the organisation in Rome. The event coincides with the 80th anniversary which underscores the past achievements and future achievements. Qu highlighted the importance and need of the transformation within FAO and across global agrifood systems.

“The year of the Snake represents opportunities for life-changing transformation and a re-birth. This reflects that the Chinese Lunar New Year is not only a traditional Chinese festivity, but represents a day for universal values and advocates respect for the diversity of global civilizations, the promotion of exchanges and mutual learning and the value of inclusiveness” said FAO Director General Qu Dongyu during his message during the celebration

Food security, sustainable development, and climate change initiatives have been discussed during the event and the FAO predominantly encouraged the collective efforts for constructing an inclusive and sustainable future.
