eShram Card  for Unorganized Workers Full Guide: Who Can Apply, Required Documents and How to Check Balance

Launched on August 26, 2021 by the Ministry of Labour and Employment the eShram Card is the pioneering initiative of the Government of India to give identity, recognition and support to workers in the unorganised sector. It provides a digital identity to millions of workers across the country such as construction workers, street vendors, gig workers, domestic workers and agricultural workers giving them access to social security, welfare schemes and financial assistance.

Who is eligible for an eShram Card?

  • Applicants must
  • Be aged 16 to 59 years
  • Be employed in an unorganized sector
  • Be non-members of EPFO, ESIC or NPS
  • Be non-income taxpayers
  • Have a valid mobile number linked to an Aadhaar number

Key Benefits

  • Insurance: Provides INR 2 lakh of coverage in case of accidental death or total disability and INR 1 lakh for partial disability under PMSBY (first year premium covered by the government).
  • Pension: Pension benefits after age of 60.
  • Healthcare: PM-JAY for medical cover.
  • Financial Aids: Direct benefit transfer during emergencies.
  • Portability: Benefits available throughout India, and open to supporting migrant workers.
  • Job Opportunities: Access to a national database of individuals which increases visibility and access to job opportunities.

Documents Required

  • Aadhaar card (linked with mobile number)
  • PAN card
  • Bank details (passbook or canceled cheque)
  • Mobile number
  • Photograph (auto-fetched from Aadhaar)
  • Optional – Voter ID/ passport/ driver’s license

Registration Process

  • Please visit eshram.gov.in
  • Click on “Register on e-Shram”
  • Complete Aadhaar e-KYC and add personal details
  • Upload all required documents
  • Get your eShram card instantly with a distinct 12-digit UAN.
  • If your mobile is not linked to Aadhaar, you may alternatively visit a CSC (Common Service Centre) to register through biometric registration.

How to Check Balance

  • Log in with your Aadhaar and OTP from your registered mobile
  • Go to “Check Balance” or “Transactions”
  • Otherwise call 14434 / 1800 889 6811
  • The eShram Card is an important step toward safety and dignity for unorganised workers in India.
