Erik Menendez has been denied parole, and his brother Lyle is attending a separate hearing at the same San Diego prison. The panel ruled that Erik is going to remain in prison for at least three more years before he can apply for parole again.

Erik, one half of the infamous Menendez brothers, has spent more than three decades behind bars. The duo is held behind bars for the gruesome 1989 murder of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in their California mansion.

The decision to deny parole to Erik Menendez is also influenced by disciplinary issues during his incarceration, in addition to the brutal crime. Officials highlighted multiple issues such as drug use, contraband cellphones and tax-related problems.

Did sexual abuse lead the Menendez brothers to act in self-defence?

Prosecutors also questioned if Erik Menendez had expressed genuine remorse, arguing that he had not fully taken responsibility for the killings. The Menendez brothers’ situation caught the attention of tens of thousands of people in the US at the time.

Defence attorneys argued that sexual abuse led the brothers to act in self-defense. But prosecutors countered that the murders are prompted by financial gain, pointing to the family’s multi-million-dollar estate.

The Menendez case remains one of the most infamous in the history of the country. It continues to attract a lot of attention in the form of documentaries, dramas and debate on issues of abuse, justice and punishment.
