Deportation of 205 Indian Migrants Highlights Strict US Immigration Policies Under Trump

A U.S. military C-17 aircraft has landed in Amritsar. This plane attracted global attention as it was carrying 205  Indian nationals. This US plane was carrying passengers who were deported from the United States.

This deportation from the US to India comes as part of a broader crackdown on illegal immigration. The illegal migrants were a hot topic of debate throughout the US presidential election. Now when Donald Trump took the change of office he showed his bold stand with “Americas First” policies and this led to direct to tightening immigration enforcement laws in the United States.

This time the deportees are mainly from Punjab and nearby areas of India. They faced removal after overstaying work visas or entering the U.S. through irregular channels. Many of these workers initially arrived legally on temporary work permits.

Indian official Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal has voiced strong opposition to the deportations arguing that many of these individuals contributed significantly to the U.S. economy through their labor. The Minister plans to address the issue with India’s External Affairs Minister, advocating for better protection of migrant workers’ rights and legal pathways for residency.

This deportation is part of a larger trend as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) data shows a sharp rise in deportations of Indian nationals. In 2023 alone over 370 Indian migrants were removed, and border interceptions have reached record highs.

The ongoing deportations and increased immigration enforcement underscore the need for stronger protections and clearer pathways for migrant workers.
