Delhi Youth Congress Protests US Deportation of Indian Immigrants
Delhi Youth Congress workers burst into the streets on Thursday protesting the deportation of illegal Indian immigrants from the United States and ending in the burning of the effigy of the US President Donald Trump. The protest coincided with a US military aircraft landing at Amritsar with 104 deported Indians, marking a significant development in the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration.
The controversy rose several notches as deportees were seen to be in handcuffs and leg restraints throughout their journey, to be shackled only at landing in Amritsar airport. The government, however, disputed these allegations saying, “the pictures that have been going around are of immigrants arriving back to Guatemala.” Congress leaders, including MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, went on a tearing attack at the Modi government’s handling of the situation where it appears Mr Modi has been talking with President Trump.
Delhi Police arrested several Indian Youth Congress members who were protesting outside Parliament, demanding accountability for the alleged mistreatment of deported Indians. Gandhi Vadra criticized the government for not being able to arrange alternative transportation for the deportees, questioning why Indians were “sent back in handcuffs and chains” despite the supposedly strong diplomatic ties between the two nations.
