The Czech Republic has made drastic changes in its legislations to favor the family, which is a turning point in terms of employment law. The new “Flexi-amendment” to the Czech Labor Code, fully effective as of 2026, grants parents unprecedented protections and flexibility. These reforms aim to harmonize professional responsibilities with family life, addressing long-standing hurdles for working parents. Some of its major initiatives are the guarantee of a right to resume the same job position of parents who come back before the age of two, and new rights to go to work with the same employer on a flexible agreement during their parental leave. This act is a manifestation of a contemporary attitude to labor relations in the area.
The cornerstone of this legislation is the overhaul of the Czech Labor Code, designed to remove rigid barriers. In the past, parents who were on leave were not sure of their respective roles. The new amendment also stipulates that in case a parent comes back before the second birthday of the child, the employer should restore him or her to the initial workplace and job. In addition, the amendments have lengthened probation of new employees, and at the same time reduced the time of giving notice on certain reasons of dismissal, a more flexible labour market has been created at the expense of remaining secure.
The reforms specifically target the needs of working parents by legalizing “agreements on work performed outside the employment relationship” (DPP/DPC) with the same employer. This will enable parents to remain in touch with their working place and make money when they are on parental leave without risking the main employer contract. Also, employers must now give written explanations in case they turn down requests to work fewer hours or work at home by parents with young children, making flexibility the new standard rather than the exception.
