Chevron Corporation announced an approximate 800 jobs cut in Midland County, Texas, effective July 15, 2025. This layoff announcement is part of a larger layoff being conducted by Chevron to decrease its total workforce worldwide by as much as 20% by 2026 in order to cut costs and finish cutting jobs in difficult operating environments.
The layoffs will mostly impact operations in the Permian Basin, the largest oilfield in the U.S., where Chevron has ample operations. The layoffs come shortly after a prior announcement in February 2025, in which Chevron described its plans to reduce its entire global workforce by 15 to 20% (approximately 6,000 to 8,000 jobs).
Chevron’s choice to cut costs is driven by several different factors, including the loss of its licence to operate in Venezuela, uncertainty regarding its planned $53 billion acquisition of Hess oil producer, which is in arbitration, and its refining business being financially pressured due to weak margins, with a loss in the fourth quarter of 2024 from its refining business, the first loss since 2020.
They had also announced plans to eliminate at least 600 jobs in California, effective June 1, 2025. The layoffs were also part of Chevron’s larger strategy to deal with operational and financial challenges in the global energy landscape.
Chevron had around 40,212 employees worldwide at the end of 2023. The intent behind these actions, along with other efficiency initiatives, is to achieve $2 billion to $3 billion in structural cost reductions on a company-wide basis by the end of 2026.
Chevron has also said that it will continue to support its impacted employees through the transition. The company has said that these actions are necessary to enhance long-term competitiveness for its people, shareholders, and communities.
