In Vijayawada, thousands of electricity workers from across the state of Andhra Pradesh protested and demanded overdue pay increases, job security, health benefits and union recognition. Organized by cooperated AITUC-affiliated unions AP Electricity Staff and Workers Union and Electricity Contract Workers Union, power assistants, linemen, meter readers and all other staff took part in the protest.

Why Are Power Workers Protesting?

The workers claimed that while they play an important role in ensuring there is no disruption to electricity supply in the state, they still face low wages, delayed payments, and poor working conditions. The rally was led by Communist Party of India (CPI) State Secretary K. Ramakrishna, who warned that Left parties would continue to agitate until the state government delivers justice to the workers.

What Are the Workers Demanding?

  • The main priorities are
  • Increasing salary for contracted staff and permanent staff.
  • Health insurance and other welfare provisions.
  • Payment of salaries in a timely manner according to Telangana’s direct payment system of salaries.
  • Promotions for staff and regularisation of contractors.
  • Union recognition and to have union elections.

Who Are the Faces Behind the Pay Hike Demand?

The protest focused on the plight of:

  1. Energy assistants.
  2. Line men.
  3. Meter readers.
  4. Short term hired workers in electricity services.
  5. Gram and ward secretariat employees in power utilities.

What’s Coming?

The procession started from the Vijayawada railway station and ended with a big public meeting at Dharna Chowk. Ramakrishna stressed the high-risk nature of these jobs: “The workers stopped and it will be dark even in government offices.” The protestors are now committing to continue their movement until their demands are met.
