Alarming Rise in Employee Burnout: India’s Workplace Stress Crisis

Last updated on September 1st, 2024 at 02:52 pm

A new report by MediBuddy and CII has brought to the fore some disquieting facts about work stress in India. Most shocking revelation: an astounding 62% of Indian workers reported feeling burnt out. That is a little over threefold of the average amount the world faces: 20%! In other words, this means out of 10 workers in India, about 6 among them are fighting with extreme work stress.

What Is the Cause of All This Stress?

The contributing factors to this extreme rate of burnout include the following: high work pressure, poor work-life balance.

These issues are gradually affecting the health and happiness of job satisfaction for Indian workers.

The High Cost of Healthcare

It also emerges that many Indian workers are digressing heavily out of pocket to cover healthcare expenditure. As a matter of fact, 71% of employees spend around 5% of what they earn in a year to pay for health expenses. This is a big chunk of money coming out of pocket.

What Workers Want

Interestingly, the report shows that job seekers in India today consider wellness programs as one of the things they want to look at when trying to decide where to work. They want to make sure the companies they join will keep their workers healthy and worry-free.

Current Workplace Health Options Fall Short

Unfortunately, research showed that a mere 24% of workers are satisfied with the health options currently provided at their workplaces. This means that roughly three-quarters of workers still feel their workplace could do better in caring for their health needs.

The Need for Improved Healthcare from an Employer

It is high time something changed, with so many workers investing from their pockets in health and feeling quite discontented with the available alternatives. A report views that companies operating in India should provide their employees with better and full-fledged healthcare plans.

Why This Matters

Having that many burned-out workers is detrimental to all parties involved:

* Employees experience poor health and unhappiness

* Companies lose money because tired, stressed workers are less productive

* The whole country’s economy can be slowed down as too many people become too stressed to work well

What Can Be Done?

To fix this problem, a few things could help:

1. Companies could provide better health insurance and wellness programs

2. Managers may attempt to minimize the stress linked with a work setting

3. Workers can be motivated in order to have breaks and holidays

4. Government could make policies that safeguard workers from undue quantities of stress

Visions for the Future

This is, indeed, a wake-up call for businesses in India. That only goes to prove that taking care of workers’ health and happiness is not only nice to do-it forms part of their success equation. And if the companies heed this call and make amends, they just might gain better yields in years to come-employees who are happier, healthier, and more productive.

This may reverse the trend, as stress reduction and health care options are one of the key focus areas of Indian businesses. This would indeed bring better health and more happiness in personal and work life, contributing to a healthier economy for the country in general.
