AI Job Shock: Coinbase & Freshworks Cut 1,200 Jobs — Are “One-Person Pods” a Threat to Your Job Security?

Coinciding with a dramatic year of 2026, Coinbase and Freshworks have collectively axed around 1200 jobs, and both firms are laser-focusing on artificial intelligence as the reason for the job cuts. The “one-person pod” is a new—and troubling—business paradigm that is emerging in 2026 as tech is adding up layoffs to over 100,000 in the current year alone.

The Cuts at a Glance

Coinbase has let go of around 700 staff members, a 14% cut from its workforce. Brian Armstrong, CEO of the company, didn’t hold back, stating that he would rebuild the crypto exchange as “lean, fast, and AI-native.” The restructuring also aims to reduce the number of management layers to five, below the level of the CEO/COO, to help eliminate management bloating.

Freshworks has followed with about 500 job cuts, or 11% of its staff. Despite Freshworks experiencing a growth of 16% in their revenue, they still experienced 500 layoffs accounting for 11% of their workforce. The CEO of Freshworks, Dennis Woodside, shared that over 50% of the firm’s software was created with AI help, making the amount of manual work done by engineers smaller than ever. The company anticipates a restructuring charge of $8 million as part of its transition to being a company focused on its Employee Experience (EX) business.

Both companies announced severance, healthcare and equity vesting for those affected.

What Are “One-Person Pods” — and Why Should You Care?

Coinbase is testing a completely new organisational model: One-person pods — engineering, design and product in one person, boosted by AI productivity tools and AI agents that work independently. This is the most straightforward sign that road agentic AI models in the workplace will be going.

It’s not all about cutting expenses. It is definitely a revolutionary change in the way companies operate. An AI-enabled person can easily do the job of five individuals at a much lower cost, faster pace, and without any communication and coordination efforts. It becomes the most realistic threat for office jobs that could become vulnerable to it.

AI-Enabled Layoffs: A Structural Trend, Not a Spur

They cannot be considered exceptions. By the time when both Coinbase and Freshworks revealed their plans, there had already been nearly 100,000 tech layoffs in 2026 with artificial intelligence (AI) used as the main structural cause for it. Large teams and hiring for scaling up are subtly giving way to a mentality of lean ‘AI’ companies doing more with significantly less manpower.
