2700 Jobs at Stake: UK’s Urgent Steel Crisis Response

The UK faces a critical steel crisis with 2700 jobs at risk which is reportedly due to the potential closure of British Steel’s Scunthorpe plant and it is prompting an emergency recall of Parliament on 12 April 2025. The Steel Industry Bill which is being prepared by the government is preparing to intervene in the steel operations which is leading to nationalisation. Over 1 billion euro of loss has been dealt by the British Steel company owned by China’s Jingye Group.

“The future of British Steel hangs in the balance. Jobs, investment, growth our economic and national security are all on the line. I will always act in the national interest to protect British jobs and British workers.” – Keir Starmer, Prime Minister

They have planned to shut down the blast furnaces by citing the unsustainable market conditions, despite a proposed 500 million euro by the government.
