Canada has always been considered and consistently ranks among the top countries in the world for work life balance, ranking seventh in the 2025 Global Life Work Index with a solid score of 73.46 out of 100. It is the only country in North America with regular work schedule and good legal protections.
Canadian labor standards recognize 40 hours as a standard workweek and govern overtime pay (1.5x) for hours worked beyond that. Provinces including British Columbia and Ontario impose restrictions on breaks, meal times and paid and unpaid rest periods between shifts. Federally regulated workplaces have also received updated protections for paid sick leave, personal leave, bereavement leave and use it or lose it vacation entitlements since 2019.
Ontario employers with twenty five or more employees are required under the Bill to provide a formal right to disconnect policy, supporting employees to avoid work related communications outside of their regular hours.
Employers across Canada offer flexibility when it comes to their jobs: remote and hybrid working, flextime and compressed schedules, part time and job sharing. Employees who are able to leverage flexible work arrangements reported greater satisfaction with their achieved work life balance. A Statistics Canada survey compared the satisfaction of 75% full time remote workers versus 61% on-site workers. Employees working in flexible or alternative work arrangements also feel more supported by their supervisors (Telework estimated up to 95% supervisor support)
While improving, 32% of Canadians reported that work interferes with family life (40% for those aged 35-49). But, only 3% work very long hours compared to about 10% in many OECD countries.
With flexible practices and strong labor protections there is better well being, lower burnout and higher retention. Flexible practices include unlimited PTO, remote working and family friendly policies as exemplified by Shopify and TD Bank to illustrate how balance can drive higher engagement and productivity.
