A violent protest — the worst in years — erupted in Dublin, the capital of the Republic of Ireland, after a stabbing attack left three children and a woman injured.
A man armed with a knife had stabbed the victims outside the school. They were taken to hospital after the violent incident. They sustained serious injuries because of the stabbing attack. A five-year-old girl, two other children and two adults – a woman and the suspected perpetrator of the attack, were severely injured because of the stabbing in Parnell Square East, north central Dublin.
After the tragic incident, violent protests erupted in Dublin. Buses and trams were torched during riots in Dublin city center. The violent protest intensified from a demonstration that began on Thursday afternoon. They fought running battles with police and looted shops in Dublin. The protesters taunted the police with chants and set off fireworks, while others grabbed chairs and stools from shops.
Protests also took place in the Irish parliament building, Leinster House, and officers from the Garda Mounted Support Unit. Some members of the police force had also been attacked and assaulted during riots.
In a viral video on X, previously Twitter, flames from a torched car and bus could be seen. Some protesters carried signs reading, “Irish Lives Matter.”
Justice Minister Helen McEntee pledged to take appropriate action. Helen McEntee also said that attacks on police “cannot and will not be tolerated.”
Three young children and a woman were attacked in Parnell Square East in the north of the city center. The stabbing attack took place at about 1.30pm on Thursday outside a school, Gaelscoil Choláiste Mhuire.
A man, in his 50s, armed with a knife, stabbed victims outside the school, according to media and eyewitnesses. He also sustained serious injuries.
Witnesses and the bystanders who intervened in the incident described how a man had been disarmed. Bystanders disarmed a man and pinned him to the ground after the attack.
The authorities said that the man had no terrorist link. Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said that a suspect was arrested.
The Irish president, Michael D Higgins, expressed his sympathies for a woman and the children injured in the stabbing attack.
