Trump-Putin meeting: Here are possible demands Russian President could make
US President-elect Donald Trump said on Monday that he is going to meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin “very quickly” after he takes office on January 20. But he has not provided a timeline for the highly anticipated meeting.
Bloomberg later reported that Putin is likely to demand during the possible discussions that Ukraine never join NATO. One source stated that Russia’s position is that NATO members may continue sending arms to Ukraine under bilateral security agreements.
But the aforementioned arms should never be used against Russia or for the return of occupied territories, the source added. Ukrainian leaders are unlikely to soundly receive these difficult demands as the brutal Russian invasion of Ukraine approaches its third year.
The Russian President’s reported position also contradicts Trump’s desire to conclude the conflict soon. Russian conditions also include maintaining at least de facto control over nearly 20% of Russian-occupied territories in Ukraine, as per an anonymous source.
