TikTok Cuts Trust and Safety Staff Over AI Shift and Regulatory Pressure

The worldwide trust and safety department of TikTok conducted staff reductions in operations responsible for content moderation activities. Staff members obtained the news through a memo issued by Adam Presser who holds operations leadership at the company on Thursday. These workforce reduction measures involved staff in all regional operations starting from Asia and proceeding to Europe Middle East and Africa after company-wide staff cuts in October 2023.

The organizational change at TikTok happens at a crucial time because US regulatory pressure continues to intensify. TikTok’s general user base included 50% of Americans before encountering a brief shutdown right before ByteDance and TikTok faced an ultimatum on January 19 regarding their national security status in the United States. Shou Chew reaffirmed his commitment to spend more than $2 billion on trust and safety enhancements after his public appearance as CEO in congressional sessions about child welfare concerns within the platform.

TikTok is pursuing expanded content moderation through artificial intelligence following recent cuts which initially started when hundreds of employees lost their jobs last year during the first round of terminations that focused mainly on Malaysian workforce. TikTok maintains that its worldwide trust and safety personnel number reaches 40,000 but the details of their recent reduction remain unrevealed. The modification of content moderation methods follows the widespread adoption of AI technology by social media companies which solves safety problems and handles business costs.
