Samsung Workers Shift Protest to Shop Floor; Labour Talks Advanced

Hundreds of Samsung India workers staged their strike at the production floor within the Sriperumbudur manufacturing plant after moving operations from their pre-designated protest site. The Tamil Nadu labor department brought forward the scheduled reconciliatory meeting scheduled for February 24 until noon on Thursday after the protest evolved. Workers participated in discussions on Wednesday without finding an agreement.

Three employees of the Samsung India Workers Union face suspension and the workers are requesting its complete reversal.

Workers expressed to TNIE that production suffered disruptions after employees asked allegedly illegal temporary staff to leave the premises thereby creating operational challenges. The Samsung authorities denied the workers’ claims about disruptions in plant production even though the workplace experienced worker demonstrations.

On February 5 workers started their sit-in action within specified area boundaries that later escalated after workers accused Samsung’s management of rejecting talks. Workers have taken their protest into the production area according to one of their employees because the management is refusing to meet with them.

Worker conditions at the factory highlight labor issues following the confrontational strike that requires fair treatment standards based on union representative statements. Both parties stand their ground during the progressive negotiations which have an unknown final settlement.
