Over 80 Migrant People Have Been Rescued Near Odisha-Andhra Border

More than 80 migrant workers were rescued near the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh border after trying to return domestic workers by taking walks throughout the coronavirus lockdown. The migrant workers from diverse districts in Odisha were on foot alongside the countrywide highway when they were spotted by police and brought to a nearby shelter. Authorities provided meals and help to the exhausted people who had traveled almost three hundred kilometers so far. The incident highlights the struggles of migrant workers who are not able to go back domestically amidst lockdowns.

Migrant Workers Spotted Walking Along Highway

Police patrolling near the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh border noticed a group of over eighty migrant workers on foot alongside the countrywide motorway on Monday morning. The migrant laborers had been attempting to return to their domestic districts in Odisha, almost 300 kilometers away, by foot.

Most of the employees had been from the Bargarh district in Odisha and had come to work in the Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh. With public transportation suspended due to the nationwide coronavirus lockdown, the workers, who had been desperately attempting to walk, returned home.

Workers Were Rescued And Assisted

Seeing the plight of the exhausted migrant people, police intercepted them alongside the toll road and took them to a nearby cyclone refuge in Ichapuram. Officials provided meals and water to the employees at the shelter.

The police stated that many women and kids were among the 80 Migrant People Have Been Rescued Near Odisha-Andhra Border. After strolling almost 300 kilometers from Visakhapatnam over two days, the people were tired, hungry, and in need of assistance.

Authorities contacted the Bargarh district administration in Odisha to make arrangements for the workers’ return. Officials stated the migrant laborers might be dispatched again to Odisha after proper screenings as soon as delivery offerings resume after the lockdown.

Lockdown Impact on Migrant Workers

The incident highlights the intense impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on migrant workers in one-of-a-kind states. With factories and establishments shut down, many migrant workers were left unemployed and homeless.

And regulations on transportation have left lakhs of employees stranded, not able to return to their local villages. Out of desperation, many migrant workers have attempted to stroll or cycle hundreds of kilometers back home.
