The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva held a conference on Wednesday and Thursday, after a joint proclamation that Cuba made on Tuesday regarding 53 nations to endorse the new national security law.
The Representatives from more than 20 nations backed China’s new national security law for Hong Kong.
As per Axios, on Tuesday, Cuba read out an announcement for the law supported by 52 different nations, while the U.K. stated against it, speaking for itself and other 26 nations.
At the UNHRC meeting, Russia’s ambassador stated that their support for China in realizing the “one country, two systems” policy in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and that Hong Kong issues are solely China’s internal matter.
The delegate from Afghanistan stated that the law won’t sabotage the one nation, two frames standard, and the legal rights, and freedom for Hong Kong residents, the Fox News reported.
On the other hand, the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stated on Wednesday that “Free Hong Kong was one of the world’s most steady, prosperous, and progressive urban cities. Presently it’s simply a communist-run city.”
The new law passed for Hong Kongers, criminalizes subversion, secession, terrorism, and complicity with foreign powers. People found violating this might confront life imprisonment, the CNN reported.
Many analysts criticized the law said it denotes a disintegration of the city’s valuable political and civil freedom. Whereas local and central administrations argue that the law is delayed and is necessary for curbing political unrest in Hong Kong.
The law criminalizes any protest against the government and is aimed at stopping pro-democracy demonstrators in Hong Kong who demanded freedom of the territory and curb democratic rights to protest.
So far 300 people have been apprehended on day one of the newly imposed national security law. The Chinese police stated all arrested will be bailed until the end of July except some who will face charges of provoking or abetting others under the law, CNN detailed.
