New York City has officially ended its $220 million lease agreement with the Pakistan-owned Roosevelt Hotel. It is an important migrant processing center, amid growing criticism over taxpayer spending.

After getting alot of pressure Mayor Eric Adams announced the closure of the historic Manhattan hotel, which had been converted into an emergency shelter for asylum seekers. The move comes as migrant arrivals drop significantly, from 4,000 per week in 2023 to just 350 now.

The Roosevelt Hotel is owned by Pakistan International Airlines. This hotel was being used to house thousands of migrants. The costing of the room was about $200 per night per room. Though many Republican leaders and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, criticized the deal. They were arguing that taxpayer money was going to a foreign government instead of local communities.

Mayor Eric Adams defended closing the shelter, saying it will save the city millions and allow for a more affordable way to support asylum seekers.
