Mozambique election protests: Rights experts raise alarm about repression of demonstrators

UN independent human rights experts are calling on authorities in Mozambique to prevent and end repression of protesters after the outcome of the disputed October 9 presidential elections. Ruling party Frelimo candidate Daniel Chapo got elected.

There are allegations of fraud engulfing the election results. Frelimo has been the ruling party since 1975. Because of the series of demonstrations happening in the country, at least 300 protesters have been taken into police custody.

Multiple reports also indicate that security forces had been using violent and repressive measures against demonstrators taking part in peaceful protests that continued until November 7, causing at least 30 deaths and injuring another 200 people.

Integrity of Mozambique presidential elections

Reports suggest authorities in Mozambique deployed the military to bring an end to the demonstrations. Protest leaders have announced multiple phases of demonstrations. There are also allegations of protesters carrying out reprisals against suspected police officers.

The massive protests emerged as citizens started to question the integrity of the presidential elections. There are reports of human rights defenders participating in protests or reporting on the irregularities of the election process being intimidated.

Restrictions to media freedoms are also a cause for concern. There are serious reports of attacks, intimidation and harassment of journalists. The UN rights experts stressed the need to protect the right to life, liberty and security of protesters.
