Meta, an American multinational technology conglomerate that owns and operates Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp, is set to lay off workers this month.
Meta will lay off workers from the Reality Labs division of the company. The company has already informed the workers at the Reality Labs division about the layoffs. These layoffs would take place by the end of Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Meta informed employees that the layoffs would impact the team known as the Facebook Agile Silicon Team or FAST. The team makes custom chipsets and silicon for Meta.
The Facebook Agile Silicon Team has around 600 employees under Meta’s Reality Labs division. However, it is still not known how many workers will be fired.
Workers at the Facebook Agile Silicon Team need to be mentally prepared to get the layoff news by Wednesday night.
Earlier this year, Meta laid off thousands of employees. In February 2023, Meta laid off 10,000 employees. Last year in November, Meta fired 11,000 people. Other tech companies laid off more than 12,000 workers.
Earlier this year, a restructuring of the FAST division was anticipated. Mark Elliot Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, also acknowledged that most of the year’s layoffs would take place in Spring.
Mark Zuckerberg said that the company overhired during the COVID-19 pandemic. The company did not want so many workers because there was no need. Hence, the company decided to lay off employees.
A former Meta employee had also revealed that she was getting the salary of $200,000 for doing just minor work as there was not much work in the organization.
