last week, 484 illegal immigrants were saved in libya by iom
According to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), 484 migrants, including women and children, were saved and sent back to Libya over the course of the previous week.
IOM released a statement, “In the period of April 23–29, 484 migrants were intercepted and returned to Libya.”
4,819 illegal migrants have been saved and sent back to Libya so far this year, according to Ot, which also noted that 505 illegal migrants perished and 319 more disappeared in 2023 while traveling the central Mediterranean route off the coast of Libya.
The UN agency said in the statement that a total of 24,684 migrants were saved and returned to Libya in 2022, 525 migrants died, and 848 others went missing off the Libyan coast on the central Mediterranean route.
Many migrants, mostly Africans, choose to travel from Libya across the Mediterranean Sea to European shores due to the unrest and insecurity that have engulfed the nation since the overthrow of late dictator Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011.
According to the International Organisation for Migration, 484 unauthorized immigrants were saved in Libya over the course of the previous week. This serves as a stark reminder of the perilous situation that asylum seekers and refugees face as they risk their lives to flee oppression or poverty. It is crucial that nations all over the world continue to assist these people by giving them access to safety and dignity while they look for asylum abroad. Governments must, wherever possible, implement policies that guarantee safe and legal migration routes.
