Laid Off and Locked Out: H-1B Workers Struggle to Stay Afloat

Many Indian tech professionals living in the United States are going through a very difficult time. Big American companies like Google and Microsoft are laying off thousands of workers. A large number of these workers are Indians who are in the U.S. on H-1B visas.

This visa allows them to stay in the country only if they have a job. If they lose their job, they have just 60 days to find another one—or they must leave the country.

People are sharing their stories online. One woman said she was laid off just before her visa grace period started. She now has very little time to find new work. Stories like hers are becoming more common.

Because of these job cuts, many are looking for remote jobs. Some are preparing to move back to India.

The tech industry in India is growing in various areas like artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and business software. For some, going back home might be the best option for now.

It’s a hard moment for many Indian professionals in the U.S., who are trying to protect their jobs, stay in the country legally, and plan their future.
