Israel has renewed re-entry visas for Sri Lankan workers until July 31, 2025, due to continuing instability in the Middle East. This allows those who temporarily returned to Sri Lanka to re-enter Israel without needing a new visa, and it extends the much-needed relief in light of resumed international flights and disrupted schedules of work.
The extension is part of the initiative taken by Israel’s Population and Immigration Authority (PIBA) to help foreign workers who were stuck due to travel restrictions and tensions in the region, including numerous Sri Lankan nationals who were stuck due to COVID-19 and conflict. The extension allows individuals the option of returning to work without having to go through another visa application process.
A majority of Sri Lankan workers are employed in essential departments: elder caregiving, agricultural labour and construction where the worker fulfils a crucial skills gap. The resumption of flights will allow for a visa extension, continuity for the worker and resale for the Israeli employer.
Jobs in Israel are a critical income source for many. The extension provides families that rely on remittances with the opportunity to regain economic stability and allows families to lessen the burden of visa problems during tough times.
As both countries mutually benefit from these recent developments, there is an emerging momentum for worker protections, wages and coverage through expanded agreements. This development represents a shift to increased labour cooperation along with providing a pathway to responsible migration.
In fact, more than just an update to a policy, an extension represents a pathway back to meaningful opportunity for thousands of Sri Lankan workers.
