Story Behind Labour Day

The story of Labour Day begins in the late nineteenth century in the United States, when workers demanded an eight-hour workday. On May 1, 1886, a nationwide strike occurred. What started out as a peaceful meeting in Chicago’s Haymarket Square became increasingly brutal after someone threw a bomb into the crowd. This incident, later dubbed the Haymarket Affair, resulted in the deaths of seven police officers and four civilians.

Despite the great tragedy, it became a symbol of labour struggle everywhere. Since then, May 1 has been kept as a day to promote workers’ rights and the improvement of work conditions.

Why Labour Day Importance Today

Labour Day was to remind how much the workers have contributed to nation building. From factories and farms to offices and hospitals, every occupation contributes to the growth of society.

  • Furthermore, the day serves to:
  • Educate workers about their rights.
  • Protect them from unfair treatment.
  • Promote better working conditions for all.

Celebrate the achievements of the labour movement.

Celebrated on the first day of May, i.e., May 1st, it is a public holiday in many countries. On this date, governments, unions, and other organizations engage in:

  • Rallies and marches
  • Seminars and public talks
  • Posters and awareness campaigns

The focus behind all this is to salute the workers and keep the conversations alive regarding their challenges and rights. May 1 is observed as a national holiday in countries like India, China, South Africa, Tunisia, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe.

International Labour Day 2025 becomes more than just a holiday. The day reflects the struggles workers have been through and the progress that has since been made towards fairer work conditions. It’s also about standing for those who endure hardships and building a future that respects and protects all workers.
