During the 113th International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva, Secretary for Labour and Welfare Mr. Chris Sun led Hong Kong’s delegation and took the opportunity to raise awareness of the city’s workforce strategies and economic developments on a global stage.
Mr Sun was accompanied by the Commissioner for Labour, Ms May Chan and the representatives of the employers and employees from the Labour Advisory Board. This group was part of the delegation for the People’s Republic of China (PRC). During the plenary session, Mr. Sun was in attendance while Vice Minister of Human Resources and Social Security Mr. Wu Xiuzhang presented the Director-General’s report “Jobs, Rights and Growth: Reinforcing the Connection”.
In addition to attending almost all plenary and committee meetings, Mr Sun held bilateral meetings with senior ILO officials and world labour leaders regarding the application of international labour standards, social protection systems, occupational safety and health, labour relations and the change in platform economies. Mr Sun also provided updates on Hong Kong’s labour market and addressed feedback received from ILO constituents.
He further conversed with senior mainland officials including Ambassador Chen Xu, PRC’s Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva. Mr Sun stressed
the need to improve labour protections and strengthen regulation of unions in the name of national security. He expressed appreciation to the Central Government for its continuous support of the HKSAR Government.
Following the conference, Mr Sun will be heading to Munch, Germany to meet with young entrepreneurs and professionals to emphasize Hong Kong’s opportunities for growth. He will be joined by Mr Anthony Lau, Director of Hong Kong Talent Engage, on the next leg of his mission of engagement.
