German interior minister Nancy Faeser has proposed deploying the European Union border agency Frontex to Poland-Belarus border amid allegations that Belarus and Russia are using illegal migration as a tool to pressure the bloc in response to EU sanctions.

Poland is “making an important contribution to increasing security and reducing irregular migration to Europe here on the external border of the European Union,” Faeser said during her visit to Poland on October 29.

During a visit near the Polish-Belarusian border, the Minister noted that the 27-nation bloc’s asylum system should also enhance the protection of its external borders. Referring to Poland, she said that she assumes that the neighbouring country abides by the rules.

Preventing irregular migration, dismantling smuggling gangs

Besides reforming the common European asylum system, the EU is also preparing to adopt a fresh return directive, aiming to achieve more efficient handling of illegal immigration and streamlined migrant deportation procedures, as per InfoMigrants.

The Federal Police in Germany has intensified border checks at all entry points. During her recent visit, the interior minister emphasised the commitment of both countries to prevent irregular migration, dismantle smuggling gangs and target criminal activities.

Poland has significantly strengthened much of its border. Despite taking numerous measures, attempts to cross the border continue every day. In the first half of 2024, the German federal police recorded 3,117 irregular entries via the Belarus route, as per media reports.
