Apple Halts AI News Alerts Over False Headlines
Apple has for a while shut down an artificial-intelligence-powered news and entertainment notification digest due to problems of wrong information and sensational headings. The company would like to polish this feature and bring it back in future updates of the program.
The problem arose in December when RSF demanded Apple to remove the feature after it predicted the fake murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson. In the same way, another AI-created headline implicated Luigi Mangione as a suspect who purportedly committed suicide and led the BBC to file a complaint.
To that end, Apple has now disabled it in iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS Sequoia 15.3 developer previews. In response to such issues, AI summaries will be in italics wherever they are displayed, and users can turn them off with the tap of the Lock Screen button. Apple will adApple Halts AI News Alerts Over False Headlinesd a disclaimer to the interface indicating this is beta and there might be some errors in the AI’s performance.
