Amazon Workers Launch Multi-State Strike During Peak Holiday Season

Tens of thousands of Amazon workers began a major strike across multiple facilities in the United States on Thursday – a key test during the e-commerce giant’s busy holiday season. For instance, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, which represents about 10,000 employees in 10 centers struck in important places such as New York, Skokie in Illinois, Atlanta, and San Francisco insisting on the employer to provide better wages and conditions of work.

It follows the union’s Sunday ultimatum for the retail giant to start bargaining over demands after it ignored the earliest call on February 15. Despite the small number of affected facilities, which account for 1% of Amazon’s hourly workers, the timing could disrupt the company’s holiday shipping plans. Benjamin Sachs, a law professor at Harvard Law stated that Amazon does not respect workers organizing rights pointing at the company’s continued disregard for the rights of the workers at the Staten Island warehouse that successfully voted to join the union in 2022.

However, Amazon the second biggest private employer in the world currently Amazon has kept its anti-union stance on the lid while the pressure from unions is mounting. The firm revealed last month it aims at raising minimum basic wage of its fulfillment and transportation workforce by about $1.50 to around $ 9.82 per hour or 7% through a $ 2.1 billion investment. However, there are always labor issues in the company; there is the scheduled union election at Whole Foods in Philadelphia and a third union election at the union in Alabama.
