The 8th Pay Commission has been approved by the cabinet and is likely expected to come into effect on January 1, 2026, impacting almost one crore central government employees and pensioners. The most significant change is the fitment factor, which will increase from 2.57 under the 7th Pay Commission to a likely 2.86, which will essentially almost increase salaries across the board.
Minimum basic pay: From INR 18,000 to about INR 51,480, an increase of nearly 3x.
Minimum pension: From INR 9,000 to about INR 25,740.
Revisions to allowances have been proposed based on the pay structure changes:
House Rent Allowance (HRA) and Travel Allowance (TA) will be revised based on a percentage of the revised Base Salary (BSL), which will take into account posting location and job requirements.
The current Dearness Allowance (DA), approximately 55%, might be consolidated into the Base Salary (BSL), which will increase the Gross Salary but will reset the future calculations of DA.
It is likely that with the increase in salaries, NPS contributions (10% from employees + 14% from government) and CGHS charges might also be higher.

Even though there has been an expectation of January 1, 2026, for the implementation date, it is likely that the actual rollout will happen later. The commission has not yet been officially constituted, and the ToR has not yet been established, meaning implementation will almost certainly be bumped to late 2026 or early 2027.
Level 1 employees (e.g., clerks, peons) may see basic pay going from INR 18,000 to INR 34,560–INR 51,480, with net take-home pay approximately 40–50% higher.
Pensioners: A INR 9,000 pension could increase to INR 22,500–INR 25,740 depending on the final factor.
Employees and pensioners are getting good increases in pay, pension, HRA and TA. But until the commission is formed and a final proposal approved, timelines and the exact amounts are unknown. Stay tuned for the latest information and official notification.
