305 million need assistance top un aid official raises alarm about unending polycrisis
Tom Fletcher, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator and head of the UN aid co-ordination office, fears a staggering 305 million people across the globe are going to need crucial assistance in 2025 as conflicts and climate change deepen.
In an appeal for $47.4 billion to supply humanitarian aid to more than 30 countries and nine refugee-hosting nations, the UN’s top aid official noted that the global community is currently facing multiple crises of longer duration and more intensity.
Fletcher addressed questions about the changing geopolitical landscape in a bumper year of hugely significant national and presidential elections, highlighting that he believes there is compassion in the governments getting elected.
Latest estimates indicate that some 123 million people have been forcibly displaced by conflict globally. Fletcher noted that conflicts are becoming lengthier (the average length is 10 years, he noted) and the impact on civilians is dramatic.
